Department of West European Studies
Overview
Western Europe is one of the primary centers of power, thought, and agency in the contemporary international system; a region that, by possessing significant capacities in the fields of governance, economy, technology, diplomacy, culture, and knowledge production, plays a decisive role in shaping regional and global trends. The countries of this region, including Germany, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and Luxembourg, are not only key actors in the European Union and NATO but also hold prominent shares in developments related to European security, energy transition, sustainable development, digital governance, migration, geopolitical rivalries, and the future of the international order. Therefore, studying the developments in Western Europe is an undeniable necessity for a more precise understanding of the power structure in today’s world, as well as for enhancing the capacity for analysis and policymaking within the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Within this framework, the Department of West European Studies operates under the Institute for North American and European Studies at the University of Tehran, aiming to advance scientific understanding, produce specialized knowledge, and provide up-to-date, interdisciplinary analyses regarding this region. By relying on the capacity of domestic and international professors, researchers, students, and specialists, the Department seeks to pave the way for expanding scientific, research, and educational cooperation with universities and study centers in this region.
